A natural collaborator and creative thinker, Courtney is insightful, engaged, and driven to create buildings and places that positively impact lives. To her work she brings a knowledge of natural construction and green building as well as practices of positive environmental impact or biophilic design, recognizing the inherent human need for nature together with sustainable and universal design strategies.
Courtney is a NCARB certified architect licensed in Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico with over twenty years of experience in sustainable design and construction. A LEED Accredited Professional since 2004, she is also trained as an Eco-Nest Builder in the alternative construction method of straw, clay, and timber structures.
At an early age, Courtney’s love of great architecture and art was ignited. Raised in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Courtney grew up visiting the designer and tile-maker Henry Mercer, talented in distinctive poured concrete structures: Fonthill, the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, and the Mercer Museum. She then went on to study Architecture, Ceramics, and Sculpture at Bennington College and Rhode Island School of Design before moving to Pagosa Springs in 2002.
Together with her husband and son, Courtney enjoys exploring the world, especially when it involves biking, hiking, snowboarding, and discovering urban and wild environments. A devoted gardener and avid cook, you can also find Courtney spending time in her ceramic studio learning from clay.
Originally a Montana native, raised coast to coast in a Navy family, Heather graduated from the University of Oregon in 1995 with a five-year degree in Interior Architecture and double minor in Architecture and Art History. Heather first worked with the firm Zimmer Gunsul Frasca in Portland, Oregon to help spearhead the new Doernbecher Children’s Hospital design, as well as several college and auditorium designs. She was active in the Oregon chapter of the International Interior Design Association, serving for a time as their Healthcare Forum Director. Having children led her to leave architecture for the next two decades to pursue her own farm to table business that she grew alongside her family.
After 33 years in Oregon, five children and two farmsteads later, Heather and her youngest fell in love with Pagosa Springs on an archaeological travel expedition. To Courtney King Studios, Heather brings her collaborative nature, multi-tasking abilities and experience in coordinating the varied stages of the design process. Detail-oriented and creative, she adds passion and vision to the team dynamic.
When not working, she spends her days digging in the dirt or exploring the beautiful surroundings with her four-legged buddies and her often-visiting tribe.
Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Stacy earned her bachelor’s degree from Texas State University with a major in Interior Design. She cut her teeth systemizing an interior materials library for the Austin design firm, Sixth River Architecture, before joining Courtney King Studios in 2016. Stacy’s love for the challenges of architecture helps her envision possibilities within each project, using the constraints as opportunities to develop uncommon solutions and creative, well-designed spaces. Her adept proficiency in 3D modeling and her strong technical skills foster project cohesion, and her wit adds enjoyable humor.
Formerly a river raft guide in Southern Colorado, Stacy has a keen interest in partaking in just about any water activity. She also spends a lot of her free time with her husband and one year old daughter playing games, hiking with their dog, and listening to live music out and about with friends and family.
Since entering the construction trades in 1973, Brad has worked in most every phase of building including plumbing, electrical, cabinetmaking, tile, framing, concrete, and finish carpentry. His licensed contractor experience led him to pursue engineering and he went on to graduate Cuma Sum Laude from the Oregon Institute of Technology in 1998. Brad is a licensed engineer in Colorado, working closely with Courtney King Studios since 2017. Brad’s extensive hands-on building knowledge laid the foundation for his engineering skills and greatly informs his innate design prowess.
Considering himself a cyclist as much as an engineer, Brad has accomplished multiple lengthy unsupported bike tours across the county and worldwide. He and his wife moved from California to Pagosa Springs in 2015 where he built them a home and hasn’t looked back. Outside of the office you can find Brad fishing, river rafting, back country skiing, cycling, or serving with the local Search and Rescue.
“My husband and I recently had the pleasure of working with Courtney King, a talented architect based in Colorado. Courtney was instrumental in helping us design and build our dream home in the mountains. Her attention to detail, creative vision, and dedication to quality craftsmanship truly shone through in the finished product.
Courtney was a pleasure to work with from start to finish. She listened carefully to our ideas and preferences, and worked with us to develop a design that was both functional and beautiful. She was patient and responsive throughout the process, and was always available to answer our questions and address any concerns we had.
The end result is a home that is truly one-of-a-kind, and a testament to Courtney’s skill and expertise as an architect. We couldn’t be happier with the final product, and we would highly recommend Courtney to anyone looking for a top-notch architect in Colorado. Thank you, Courtney, for helping us create our dream home.”
