Situated along a glacial lake, this rare inholding was crafted using a unique timber framing technique and is the centerpiece of the original historic 160-acre homestead claimed in 1897 by Wild West legend, Dutch Henry Born. Featured on the cover of Mountain Living Magazine, the lodge artfully combines the best of log and timber with exceptional local craftsmanship. 

Inspiration for the secluded ranch was drawn from America’s national park lodges – grand retreats which provide refuge in the wild. Courtney King Studios worked closely together with repeat clients, and contractor Moore & Company on this grand lakeside lodge.

The team collaborated exclusively with local partners in all aspects of design. ‘Piece on Piece’ log construction combines the best of log and timber framing in a relatively rare technique, making use of smaller pieces of timber infilled between timber posts. Hand-hewn Colorado spruce was sourced for this time-honored building technique, instilling a singular American West style. 

Upon entry, the perfectly framed lake view welcomes guests into the five-bedroom lodge. “The timber framed porte-cochere entry creates a dazzling arrival experience. ‘When you pull up, we have these big doors, and through the doors you can see all the way out through the back to the lake,’ Phyllis Young, the client explains. ‘It’s always spectacular.’” Catwalks branch out above the Great Room and main common area, opening the hearth of the home with a classic touch. Every bedroom and living space features a balcony or large porch – a Courtney King Studios signature – with connection to nature in mind.  

The Great Room features an oversized, double-sided stone fireplace which connects to the open kitchen and dining area. Interior millwork, doors, and cabinetry were custom designed by expert local craftsman, Mike Musgrove. Slate flooring along with refreshing white accents throughout help to balance the ample use of exposed wood and trusses.

A special alpine lake destination, Born Lake Lodge is the epitome of mountain luxury, inspiring all with its modern take on Western timber aesthetic and local artisanal collaboration.
