WEST FORK TREASURE
PAGOSA SPRINGS, COLORADO
This Pagosa Springs property, located on the West Fork of the San Juan River, holds a cherished legacy as family retreat, spanning generations, for a family originally from Santa Fe.
. . .
Following the unfortunate loss of the original home to a chimney fire, the owners embarked on a quest to replace this heritage home with a custom design that speaks to the area’s Northern New Mexican architecture.
Built on the same location of the original home, the new residence rises from the ashes and commands attention. Its captivating shape and expansive glass windows frame panoramic vistas of the dramatic valley landscape held by the surrounding mountains. High clerestory windows and large glass doors infuse the interiors with natural light and forge a tangible connection with the outdoors. Methodical sun studies were performed to ensure optimal building performance for an efficient and comfortable home.
Upon entry, thoughtfully designed living spaces and private retreats unfold. Architectural elements include contrasting light plaster and natural wood detailing, all carefully infused to evoke warmth and understated elegance. The kitchen includes a wood burning stove and this horno adds a charming touch to the heart of the home with its unique cooking experience and reference to New Mexican traditions. A connected rocket stove heated bench adds warmth and cozy ambiance as well.
The primary bedroom features an open loft with a staircase leading to a separate office space and corner window overlooking the West Fork of the San Juan River. Alternating tread ship ladder steps to the upstairs lofts in the children’s realm add a touch of whimsy and playfulness to the design, along with a ‘secret’ connecting door so the brother and sister duo have direct access. The inclusion of an interior swimming pool and spa adds a luxurious element to the home, offering year-round relaxation regardless of the harsh weather outside.
This West Fork Treasure represents comfort, functionality and timelessness, and most importantly, it honors the family’s connection to their family’s Colorado and New Mexico family roots.
